default
Posted on Mon, 22 Jun 2015
Question: Does desmopressin for bladder control, bed wetting problems, have good results? My daughter is 7 and has a family history of bed wetting and bladder control issues until about 12 years of age. Any serious side effects?

Brief Answer:
Side effects are extremely rare with desmopressin, it is a good drug

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. Yes, desmopressin will help especially for night time bedwetting, and I am sure it should help when taken in the right dosage. Dosage depends on what form it has been taken (nasal spray, oral tablets, injections, nasal solutions)

Side effects with desmopressin are very rare and I really doubt this should be an issue for your child, so please use it without any second thoughts. Please feel free to write back to me for any clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

Thanks. As a medical professional, would you reccomend allowing the child to simply grow out of the bed wetting like her aunt and cousin did around 12 years of age? Should i continue to "diaper" a 7 year old child? What tests should be run prior to administering this type of medication?

Brief Answer:
I would recommend either of the two options listed below

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again.

I would recommend either of the two:

1. From a few studies, bedwetting in children has been found to be associated with some emotional issues. Children who felt were being neglected or not getting enough attention from their parents were found to wet their bed more often than children who were satisfied with the attention they received from their parents.

So my first recommendation would be to start supporting your child, and give your daughter more attention than what she has been getting and then observe if there are any changes

2. Use desmopression and also support your child; you can also choose this option if the first option fails to show results

But avoid using diapers for your child, I do not recommend it. No tests are really required at this point of time, and either or both of the above can be used without any tests. I hope you find my response helpful.

Best wishes.
