Does Cymbalta Help In Reducing Seizures?

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Apr 2014
Question: Dr Kumar: You answered a query of mine a week ago. Here are some more questions. 1. I am taking 600 mg tegretol and 60 mg Cymbalta [newly added]. I am assuming that the Cymbalta will help eliminate or cut down on the appearance of seizure activity. Is that correct? 2. Since I have been taking AEDs, and especially since I started taking Tegretol in December, I have been very confused. In writing it does not show but if you were in conversation w me you would know it. My thinking is slow, I have word finding problems, and I often do not make sense. Do you think that the addition of the Cymbalta will relieve this kind of problem?

Brief Answer: My reply is below. Detailed Answer: Thank you for getting back. Regarding your queries: 1. Cymbalta (duloxetine) has no effect in reducing the seizures. It is commonly used for treating neuropathic pain. 2. Cymbalta would also not make any improvement in reducing confusion or in improving word findings difficulties. I hope it helps. I neglected to tell you that I have been diagnosed with major depression and that it was not treated during the time the seizure activity was noted. The recently added Cymbalta has improved my sleep greatly and I am generally more relaxed but very depressed. This is why I thought it would have an effect on seizure activity. Does this change your opinion? I am interested in your opinion whatever it is.

Brief Answer: Cymbalta has anti-depressant activity. Detailed Answer: Thank you for getting back. Cymbalta does have anti-depressant activity and I am glad to note that your sleep is better and you are more relaxed. However, for treating your depression, I would have preferred sertraline or escitalopram. In any case, cymbalta would not have any effect (positive or negative) on seizure activity.
