Posted on Wed, 5 Apr 2017
Question: For folliculitis I took a doxycycline today morning.. Just the first pill for a five day course. But now i have to travel tomorrow and as a result I want to take Augmentin 625 so that folliculitis doesn't flare up. My question is I took Doxycycline 100mg today morming at 9am and now i want to start augmentin 625 twice a day starting post lunch. Is it okay? I did not have doxy prior to today morning.

Brief Answer:
Can take augmentin

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I am dr.kakkar (dermatologist). I have gone through your query and I have noted your concern.

Yes. You can take augmentin for folliculitis. In fact it would be a better choice though either of these would work. Doxycycline is more broader in coverage and not justified for a sinple folliculitis. Does nt matter if you took a dose of doxycycline. The antibiotic can be changed to a different one since it is very early into an antibiotic course (just a single dose).

Thank You doctor. I have been augmemtin all the time this problem flares up. Is there anything I should be worried about for use of augmentin? This medicine doesnt upset my stomach and no other visible side effects as such. Is this a safe medicine to take everytime I have this problem? I mean any major side effects in the long run.

Brief Answer:
Regarding recurrent folliculitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

If you have a recurrent issue with folliculitis you must get a pus culture and antibiotic sensitivity test from one of the foliculitis lesions as this would guide appropriate antibiotic therapy. Recurrent folliculitis means that you may be a staph aureus carrier. This can be confirmed by swabing sites like nares, pharynx/throat, axilla, umbilicus and anal verge. In that case you must use a mupirocin 2% ointment, twice daily application, at all possible sites of staph colonization e.g just inside external nares, axilla, umbilicus, anal verge. In addition you may also benefit from an antibacterial soap e.g chlorhexidine based soap or body wash.
Recurrent courses of augmentin may make it less effective as bacteria may become resistant to it. Augmentin is a penicillin group of drug and although it is a safe antibiotic in most of the individuals apart from causing stomach upset, however, it may cause a drug rash which may be mild or very severe.
