default
Posted on Fri, 27 Jun 2014
Question: Do any of these medications cause memory loss or confusion in a 92 year old woman? She is out of the hospital for 2 weeks after having her heart shocked back into a normal sequence. She always complains of pain and her hands shake, and her legs and ankles swelled before hospital. Sharp as a tack before. She is taking1 Amiodarone, 1Carvedilol, 1Furosemide and 1 Multi-vitamin in the AM. Taking 1 Amiodarone, 1 Carvedilol and 1 Varelto in the PM. No aspirin or alcohol allowed . May use Tylenol for pain due to blood thinner Varelto.

Brief Answer:
Her current medications are safe.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted her symptoms and the list of medications. These medications are safe and do not cause memory loss and confusion.

It is possible that her recent use of antibiotics and urinary tract infection is partly responsible for her symptoms. It may take a bit longer for an elderly person to recover from that.

Also, there could be mild brain ischemia (lack of blood flow to brain) just prior to shocking of the heart. This could also contribute to the memory loss and confusion.

In any case, we expect improvement in her condition in coming days.

I hope my answer helps. Please get back if you have any follow up queries or if you require any additional information.

Wishing you good health,
