Do Weak Anabolic Steroids Boost One's Thyroid Hormone Levels?

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Dec 2015
Question: Dear Doctor, I had weak anabolic steroids ( oxandrolone 2.5mg once daily) for 3 months when i was a teen to boost my height. Apparently, it was designed to boost my growth hormone levels, but im curious, did it boost my thyroid hormone levels also via increased secretion?

Thanks in advance

Brief Answer:
Thyroid

Detailed Answer:
There should have been no significant change in your thyroid hormone levels by the anabolic steroid treatment. Anabolic steroids may have varying effects on thyroid but they are not known to cause practically relevant issues during a relatively short three month course even during teen years. Moreover there is a paucity of published scientific literature on this subject because anabolic steroids are not regarded as safe. So there is not a whole lot of published work addressing this matter. Furthermore there are a wide variety of anabolic steroids and the exact impact of each on thyroid hormones has not been studied to my knowledge.

Thank you Dr. Topiwala for the valued answer.

I came across a study on mature male rats. Kindly find here the title for your reference:
'Effect of Testosterone Propionate on the Thyroid Hormone Secretion Rate in Adult Male Rats'

It suggests the test increased secretion rate of thyroid hormone. Does this possibly apply to humans as well?

Also finally, is there a hormone that contributes to growth that is not modulated by testosterone? Because it appears as though test increases every hormone in our bodies! i wish if you can advise. Many thanks and Regards, XXXX

Detailed Answer:
I have noted your reference article.

To the best of my knowledge, this has not been shown to be universally applicable to humans in a standard way.

To answer your other question: No. There is no hormone contributing to growth that is not affected by testosterone.
Sex steroids such as testosterone have an important effect on growth along with the main driver ie Growth hormone.
