Question: Does having small ovarian focicles mean having PCOS?

Brief Answer:
Not necessarily.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.

The diagnosis of polycystic ovarian disease is based on several features put together. The finding of several follicles in the ovary is one of them.

The isolated finding of multiple follicles does not mean you have PCOD.

A history of irregular cycles, anovulation or infrequent ovulation, cysts in the ovaries, abnormal hair growth, infertility, abnormal hormone levels etc., are some features seen with PCOD.

Hope your query has been answered. Please feel free to contact for further clarification. I will be happy to help.

Answered by Dr. Shanti Vennam (6 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Not really.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

As I have mentioned in the earlier reply, establishing the diagnosis of PCOD needs several factors and the isolated finding of multiple follicles is not significant.

Moreover, PCOD is a treatable condition and gives good results. So, with modern medical methods, infertility is easily handled. Hence, you need not worry.

Hope this helps.

An ER Attending physician referred me to a gynecologist I was in the er yesterday with abdnorminal pain and back pain. My labs and ct scan normal, however he say that I have a
Smal ovarian follicles. My results says ""Probable small ovarian follicles.""
doctor
Answered by Dr. Shanti Vennam (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
Probably part of routine evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing again.

The referral could be part of a routine evaluation since there was perhaps no obvious cause for the pain on general exam.

Otherwise, the finding of follicles is a frequent observation.

Please exclude musculoskeletal causes also. Proceed with the gynecological assessment also.

Hope this helps.

regards,
Shanti.V.
