Question: I took a lipase test after having two bowls of cereal two hours earlier as well as antacids and oneprazole and zantac. How might the results be skewed if at all? My results were 25.

Brief Answer:
Repeat the test properly after 12 hours of fasting.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Dear,
Thank you for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.
Have gone through your details and i appreciate your concern.

Before answering your query i would like to give you a small briefing about what is lipase and how this test is done. This will help you to understand things better.

Lipase is a pancreatic enzyme that catalyses the breakdown of fats to fatty acids and glycerol or other alcohols. When you eat, lipase is released into your digestive tract to help your intestines break down the fats in the food you’re eating. Lipase also allows cell nutrients and cell waste to move through the walls of the cells in your body.Certain levels of lipase are needed to maintain normal digestive and cell function. Abnormally high levels of the enzyme in your blood can be a sign of problem with pancreas or biliary system. The serum lipase test is used to measure the amount of lipase in the body.

For going througha lipase test you need to fast for eight hours before you get the test. Typically, this means that no food or drink, except water, can be taken by mouth after midnight the night before. As per your history you had two bowls of cereals before having the test. This is seriously going to hamper the sesitivity of the test.
Main principle behind keeping you fasting for overnight is to maintain secretory activity of pancreatic enzyme at baseline however taking food has stimulated the secretion of lipase into the digestive tract hence the activity of the enzyme that would be recorded while testing will be much more then baseline level.

Every test has a protocol. Before laying down the procedures of the test they are tested in four stages for more then 15 years.
So if you have not followed a particular step of performing test then the result as a whole should be declared null and void and the test should be repeated again following all proper instructions.

Antacid omeprazole and zantac has no direct contraindication for lipase test but again the test is strictly conducted after atleast 8 hours of fasting. All these drugs have some direct or indirect effect on gastro intestinal system hence can severely hamper the sensitivity of the test.

Values below 110 U/L,may indicate the presence of condition like cystic fibrosis. You have just mentioned 25 .Please mention the exact unit in which the value has been calculated.

However the result should be considered null and tests should be repeated properly.

Hope i answered your query well.
In case you have any other doubt feel free to ask.

Regards.

The test was done to check for acute pancreatitis and the results were 25 U/L with a defined normal limit of 7-60. If the suggestion that eating would result in a higher lipase level then I'm less concerned since I was told that an exceedingly high number is what they'd be looking for to suggest possible pancreatitis. Sounds like the fasting test may have resulted in an even lower number .

Brief Answer:
Follow up answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Yes that's true even after stimulation by food level of lipase is in normal limits so its but obvious that if test would have been performed in fasting state results would be lower.
So practically speaking you should not worry its normal.
Theoretically speaking test should be done again in fasting state.
So definitely by going on reading of lipase it can't be pancreatitis. However CT abdomen should be done to confirm it.

However if i would have been your primary i would have considered these readings as vaild.

Thanks.
