Do Mesalamine Suppositories Cause Dry Mouth?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Oct 2016
Question: For the past five or six weeks, I have had a dry mouth. I have no other symptoms at all. My appetite and taste buds are fine, my gums aren't bleeding, and my saliva isn't stringy or odd--there just doesn't seem to be quite enough saliva for complete comfort.

Questions:
1. What could be causing this? Could the mesalamine suppositories have caused and still be causing my dry mouth?
2. Should I schedule a visit to my doctor or dentist? or should I just try to keep drinking more and maybe chewing sugarless gum until my next regularly scheduled appointments?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
Dry mouth is one of the recognized but uncommon side effects of Mesalazine and is possible with suppositories. More common cause of a dry mouth is anxiety and if you have any stress, that may be a cause. There are other causes like Sjogren's syndrome.
You could try using lemon, chewing gum etc to increase the salivary secretion and drink about 2 to 3 liters of water. Avoid caffeine drinks and sodas .
Eat healthy food, exercise a minimum of 30 minutes a day and practice stress relief measures.
If you are not better in a week, schedule a visit to your doctor.

This is very helpful. Thank you. One last question: could my Irritable Bowel Syndrome be a possible cause of dry mouth? (I do not currently have any other of my IBS symptoms.)
