Do Cocaine And Ecstasy Affect The Fetus During Early Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Fri, 27 Nov 2015
Question: My husband and I had been trying to get pregnant for nearly 6 months with no success. We decided to take a break for a few months. On halloween I started my period (I thought was my period), and we went to a party and I took some ecstasy and did some cocaine. I did not think there was any way I was pregnant since I started my period. The next day the bleeding stopped, and the day after I took a pregnancy test and it came back positive. I guess the bleeding could have been implantation bleeding and not my period. We are extremely worried that there could be something wrong with the baby because I used drugs and we don't know what to do. I'm guessing I was 3.5 weeks pregnant the night of the party. A lot of things we've read say not to worry but others say week 3 is vital to development. Any input to the percentages of there being damage done to the baby would be very appreciated. We are not sure whether to move forward with the pregnancy or not but cannot stand the thought of terminating a baby nor risking the quality of life of an innocent child. Thanks!

Brief Answer:
No risk to baby by just one exposure

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I understand your concerns effects of drugs on the baby.

There is no chance of baby getting affected by only few doses of drugs taken on one day. It is too early for the baby to be affected by just one day.

There is nothing to worry.

No need to terminate the baby. I see no risk.

Can you please elaborate on how baby would be ok even though implantation had already happened and vital organs are beginning to develop in the third week? Wouldn't the baby be ingesting everything I take in by the third week?Im just really concerned that there was damage done during that point of development.

Brief Answer:
Small doses won't reach baby

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

One dose is not enough to have entered baby in large quantities to cause damage. This dose was enough to be entering your blood stream and pass out of urine.

Damage if at all can be identified by ultrasound scan.

let me know if you need anymore help.

Just wanted to clarify that you do not think that one night of doing large amounts of illicit drugs could interfere with neural tube development, etc. and that you would advise carrying on with pregnancy? Thank you for all of your help and non-judgment.

Brief Answer:
Continue pregnancy without worries.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You got me right.

Just one night of doing drugs is unlikely to affect your baby. Continue pregnancy.

Remember to get ultrasound scans at 12 weeks and 20 weeks of pregnancy which are important time to identify if anything is wrong.

I don't see any reason to worry.

Keep me updated about the progress of pregnancy as I can help you with anymore doubts you get during pregnancy.
