Do Carafate Tablets Need To Be Dissolved In An Acidic Beverage?

Question: I was prescribed carafate tablets that I desolve in water, and drink. A nurse friend said that I needed to mix this with an acidic beverage. Is there any truth to that! The Doctors instructions are only for water.

Hi and thanks so much for this query.

Carafate is best taken with water on an empty stomach 1 hour before meals and at bedtime.. There is no stated directive to take with an acidic beverage and I highly discourage against that. Acid is bad for the stomach and you shouldn't be taking it much.

I now know the test for h pylori was not done. I was given erroneous enforcement. I am now traveling for a month. I will seek medical help if needed along the way. I do take Prilosec bid, can a third dose be added?

Thanks for the updates. A third dose of prilosec wouldn't be of any additional benefit. I will not recommend it.
