Question: Hello, I am a runner and I have recently developed a pain on the outside of my right knee. The upper portion near the top of my knee cap but to the right of it. It hurts when I bend my knee and makes a slight crack or pop when I sit down and bend my knee in and out. I thought it may be an IT band issue but it seems different. Could you please help me? Should I be doing hip strengthening exercises?

Thanks for posting your query.
If you can feel a slight pop or crack in the area on bending then an injury of the XXXXXXX structures of the knee is likely.
You can help the improvement by-
1. Avoid any strenuous knee exercises, lifting weights, climbing stairs, cycling, etc.
2. Take a mild pain killer like acetaminophen every 8 hourly.
3. Do a hot fomentation in the area twice daily.
4. You can apply a local analgesic gel like Volini also.
5. Use an elastic knee brace for better knee support while walking.
Do consult an Orthopedician for a physical examination and stronger prescription medicines in case there is swelling, persistent pain and difficulty in walking.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Please accept my answer in case you do not have further queries.
Wishing you good health.

I just had an ankle sock brace placed on my right foot two days ago. My podiatrist said the swelling of my right ankle area was due to walking in slip-on sandals (no back of the foot or sling straps) the last 4 weeks on uneven terrain. I am to wear the brace all day except at night when I sleep. Sometime yesterday, I bumped my leg and did not think much of it until today when I noticed a terrible bruise on my right calf (sp) with a small hard knot underneath! Is this normal? Is it due to the brace being tight and constricting the blood in the right leg? What shall I do? Thanks- Teresa

Hi, I rolled my right ankle about 4 weeks ago. After about 2-3 weeks of rest and icing my right ankle, it felt pretty good. Good enough to start jogging again. I could walk and jog with no pain. On the forth week I tried to get back into soccer. Before the game I laced up my shoes and ankle brace then stood straight up to go for a jog. Immediately when I stood up I noticed a sharp ripping pain, across the bottom of my shin maybe near the top of the extensor tendons (if that s the right name for it, the tendon attached to the tibia), moving from the outside to the inside of my foot. I tried loosening the ankle brace but still the ripping pain continued when I stood up. I completely loosened the ankle brace and the ripping pain left and I could jog again. I decided not to play and started to examine the pain. The ripping pain only occurs when I over-extend my right leg or when I am standing/extending my leg and touch/grab my lower shin/upper ankle area. I had an X-Ray done on my lower leg/ankle but I haven t heard back from the doctor so I figured there wasn t any issues with my bones or ligaments. That leads me to believe it is a partial tear(s) in the muscle or tendon. Could you please give me a general idea if I need to have it surgically repaired or will I be able to continue resting and wait it out and eventually it will heal properly all on its own? Thanks Adam Cyr

I've been walking daily for exercise and have developed pain in the bottom of my right foot. It seems to be in the arch and outer portions of the foot including the toes.

I believe I have a ruptured Achilles’ tendon. I’m on Medicare and want to avoid $$ going to both a podiatrist and an orthopedic doctor. Which specialist would I select for treatment? Pain is quite severe and has been getting worse for last month ....

For the past few months the bottom of my left heel hurts and difficult to walk on. Mainly hurts after I work out or if I am on it a lot during a day.
