Want To Know Probable Risk Of A Dental Xray Done To My Wife By A Dentist ?

Question: Dear Madam/ Sir

I am here to understand the probable risk of a dental Xray done to my Wife by a dentist in XXXXXXX

We are 5 weeks pregnant and have been to a dentist this morning ( 27th Aug, 2018). After speaking to the dentist for a few moments, she started taking X-rays without any apron. All this while i was being stupid and did not realise until it suddenly occurred to our stupid brains. Then we told the doctor that we are pregnant .
Upon hearing this the doctor initially blamed us for not telling this and later when i questioned that if she wasn't supposed to find out before doing a rapid round of x-rays , she started to begin apologising and assuring that nothing would happen to the foetus.

We are very concerned and we need the help of a truly independent doctor's group to guide us at this time of crisis in our personal lives. How do we determine what kind of dose did my baby get exposed to or absorb. She performed 4 x-rays in total for an inconclusive diagnosis.

I am not here to complain but to understand the risk that we were exposed to due to both negligence of the dentist and our lack of presence of mind.

Please let me know what information do we need from the doctor to understand the magnitude of the radiation dose that our baby is exposed to and what harm can it cause the child.

Sincerely awaiting your response.

Thank you in Advance
Best Regards

Brief Answer:
The radiation dose from dental xray is approximately 0.010 mSv.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Dental xrays are least harmful of all types of radiation used in taking xrays. The radiation dose is approximately 0.010 mSv.Keeping in mind adverse radiation effects, the xray caused an increased risk of 0.000113%. It is much less than the radiation which can cause significant effects. There is a 99.999887% possibility that no harm was caused due to the xray.

Please avoid any xray during pregnancy unless discussed with your doctors.
Regards.

Thank you for your response. Really appreciate it.

Ok. Also at the age of 5 weeks, would there be any considerable effects if any to the baby.

We are trying to ascertain the risk and if we should go ahead with the baby. We want to ensure that we don't put the baby at any risk.

Thank you again for your response.

Brief Answer:
There is near nil risk of any problems in the baby

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

In view of the extremely low dose of radiation used in dental xrays and the uterus being located away from the primary area of xray exposure, I understand that the chances of any harmful effects on the pregnancy is nearly nil.

When I say nearly nil, it means I have not come across any research material where they have blamed dental xrays during pregnancy for any physical defects in a baby.

If the above situation had happened with my family or relative, I would have told them to ignore this particular xray incident but to strictly avoid any other xray exposure during the pregnancy.

Regards,
