Could An Ablation Procedure Done For SVT Cause Atrial Fibrillation?

default
Posted on Wed, 17 Jan 2024
Question: I just had an ablation procedure yesterday for svt. The cardiologist was able to identify 4 areas which were causing flutter and abated them. He was unable to reproduce svt. after the procedure I went into Afib for a short period. My question is this, could the procedure have caused the atrial fibrillation? early this morning, at 2:20 am I had the first of 4 episodes of irregular heart beat, one lasting about ten minutes.
I crushed an aspirin and took a prescribed zoloft and 5mg diazapam. These episodes occured on a regular basis almost every night for several weeks. I also take 25mg of metoprolol which the doctor reduced to 12.5 milligrams. He also recommended Flecainade which, after reading up on it I chose not to take, The electophysiologis that treated me has a great reputation and I have confidence in him, however, I find it hard to live with these symptoms. I dread going to sleep.
What are your thoughts?
Thank you

I would explain as follows:

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I passed carefully through your question and would explain that it is quite normal to have some episodes of cardiac arrhythmia after the ablation procedure.

They are related to the inflammation and the local edema in the myocardial tissues, related to the ablation.

Everything will be ok after a couple of weeks when the myocardial tissue will recover from the procedure.

In the meantime I would recommend avoiding straining physical activity and excessive caffeine intake, which may trigger cardiac arrhythmia.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

I remain at your disposal for any further questions whenever you need!

It's been a few days since the ablation was done. I'm experiencing fluttering in my heart and a sense of warmth which spreads through my body. These episodes have been occuring for nearly 2 months now. I went back to the hospital for observation. During the ealy morning 2 more of these episodes woke me up. Duration was just 3 or 4 minutes. My monitor showed that cardiac functions were normal! What could be causing this?

Detailed Answer:
Hello again!

Those fluttering sensations may be due to short episodic atrial fibrillation or supraventricular tachycardia.

But before concluding to such an alternative it should be confirmed by a continuous ECG monitoring (Holter).

In addition, other structural damages, potential complications of cardiac ablations should be sought as well.

Coming to this point, a cardiac ultrasound is recommended to properly investigating cardiac structures (heart valves, atrial, etc.).

In case, no abnormalities arise from the above mentioned issues, then a period of several weeks necessary to recover from transient local edema and inflammation due to cardiac ablation would be required review a steady cardiac status.

In case your unpleasant clinical symptomatology keeps persisting, you should discuss with your attending doctor and EP doctor no the opportunity of performing the above mentioned tests.

Wishing you good health!
