Question: Hi doctor,
My name is Anthony
i have been having a very odd issue. since late February i have been experiencing constipation and bloatedness. When it first started i could remember my stomach made a loud noise and i dont know if coughing helped but i couldnt stop coughing one night and then my stomach felt weird. After this i felt sick and threw up only once then i couldnt use the bathroom till a few days later i started to be able to go but it was more of diaaheria. Some days i couldnt eat and felt horrible. Now i can use the bathroom and the stool is very infrequent sometimes coming out big and small in peices but mostly small. i feel a pain in my stomach as if something wont leave. i went to the doctor recently and they checked my heart and blood and said everything was ok then he checked my anus and said i had one XXXXXXX hemmorhoid. so he gave me hydrocortisone suppository to use and i did for two weeks. recently i found my right side is often numb and pretty discomforting and also my breathing particularlly my right nostril has been hard lately no mucus and it feels closed off. i have anxiety and nervousness so i dont know if this affects me. i am just worried because i dont have any past medical problems. I feel very down everyday due to feeling not well and it's getting to me. i also have alot of gas. Im 21 5'10 a male and 192 pounds. i have also lost 20 pounds in the course of this. ive tried laxitives. anything you can imagine. thank you for your help.

Hi XXXXXXX

With the myriad of health problems including a history of depression, you need an expert evaluation especially the one who is specialized in bowel disorders. You need to consult a Gastroenterologist, who shall investigate further with Barium meal, Ultrasound abdomen to start with. If necessary he may also suggest for Endoscopy to find the real cause of the problem.

Meanwhile you may try the following:

1) Do not abuse the laxatives as they end up in lazy colon and constipation.
2) You need to hike up the amount of fibres in your diet. So try to eat high fibre diet consisting of Fruits, Vegetables (especially XXXXXXX leafy ones), naturally occurring food items and drink plenty of water. Eat less white flour, polished rice, juices (instead eat whole fruits), pizzas, burgers, white bread.
3) You have lost weight in the past but still your BMI is 27.5, so you need to reduce your weight to below 170 pounds.
4) Practice scheduled bowel movements, make it a habit to move them daily in the morning though there is no pressure built. 30 oz of water immediately after bed should help you achieve this.

I think the dryness of nostril is separate problem and needs separate evaluation. Do you have similar feeling in mouth? Is your salivation normal? Are you able to taste the food? Dryness may occur because of anxiety or some other disease like Sjogren’s Syndrome. It would be good to mention your complete treatment yet.

Hi XXXXXXX

Thanks for writing back,

Have a diet XXXXXXX in fibre as I suggested earlier.
A numbness in right side of chest radiating to hand and lower limbs may be because of nerve compression in between two vertebrae when it gets out of spinal cord. You may get CT / MRI Scan of cervical vertebrae. Also check your Ser. B12 level.

Hope this answers your query
