Question: my 10 year old normally healthy daughter has had fatigue and fever ranging from 101- 99 degrees since last Thursday but was complaining of "feeling queasy" and loss of appetite for several days prior to that. no appetite and all she wants to do is sleep. now, she has developed a rash on her belly. not blisters and its not itchy. She is also complaining of eye pain although they look clear. No runny nose, cough or sore throat.

Hi XXXXXXX,
What i can conclude from the limited information provided is that she is suffering from low to moderate grade infection since last 5 days. The loss of appetite, uneasy feeling, eye pain and rash all will go for the same. As you do report about a rash (there are hundreds of rashes depending on site type and pattern and without seeing a pic of rash it wont be easy to comment on), that too may fit in viral fevers. At times rashes may be due to low platelets in blood and can be serious , so do check her blood counts. Loss of appetite is often seen with viral infections of liver and gut, so a test involving liver function, stool test may be needed as your doctor may advice. Major concern is about her sleepiness. often sick children tend to be sleepy due to reduced body reserves, reduced intake-dehydration-lack of energy; this definitely needs to be seen by a doctor in emergency as such sleepiness can at times be serious in some liver and some brain infections.
