Question: My daughter is in remission from Leukemia and is 7 years old. Her MCV is 91. I am concerned. Is there a way I can help lower this? This was on a regular relapse test last Monday. Her oncologist says she has trended high the entire time since diagnosed in 2008. She has had her port out since Feb. 16 2012. However, now it is 91 (MCV) I am concerned about MDS. My doctor says only 3 children out of 600 in the last 40 years have gotten in...but my question is...can I lower this somehow?

Hi
Thanks for writing in.
I understand your concerns. It is great that your daughter is doing well after treatment for leukemia. Now there are two things we are watchful for- disease relapse and late effects. The disease seems to be in remission. I am not too concerned about the MCV at this point as it looks pretty normal to me. MCV of 91 in a 7 yr old is fine.
MDS is a possibility after treatment of leukemia and your doctor has correctly pointed out that the incidence is low. But you cannot prevent MDS from happening by lowering the MCV. Unfortunately there is nothing that we can do at this point to prevent MDS or even secondary leukemia. We can only detect it early and treat if required. However, I reiterate that this MCV does not herald the onset of MDS.

Hope I have answered your query. I will be happy to answer any follow-up queries.
Best Wishes,

My daughter is in the last months of her maintenance treatment her diagnosis is ALL (leukemia) Through the intensive chemo she lost her hair twice, since being on her maintenance for over a year she has a full head of thick hair. We just noticed last night that her hair is falling out again, can you tell me why this would be, as the medication hasn't changed?

my son is being treated for leukemia. His billiruben was elevated and they have held his chemo. they are running tests to see if its hepatitis, or epstein barr syndrome of just an infection. what are the treatments for hepatitis A or B, or epstein barr? Right now he is jaunticed, stomach ache, loose stools and fatigued. His liver is working fine according to the liver tests so what signs do I look for if his liver starts failing? Our oncs told us this in not a big deal though, but I worry.

A 46 year old man present with moderate to severe diarrhea for 2 days, history ate a 2 days old bread. Dehydration is managed from mild-moderate and prevented from severe dehydration by admitted to ER and given 500 cc fluid replacement. No fever to subfebris. Blood sample taken and shows mostly normal result (HB, Leu, Ery, ESR, Pla, HT, MCV, MCH, MCHC are normal). Natrium is little low, 132. However the diff count shows Basophil 0, eosinophil 0, rod 20, segment 45, lymphocyte 18, monocyte 6. The thing that worries me that it written in the lab result Myelocyte 3%, metamyelocyte 8%. Should I worry?
Because leukemia doesn't match. Or this is a begining of leukemia? Thanks

My best friend called me. She woke up in the middle of the night last night with a feeling of "heaviness" in her chest & felt like she couldn't get a full breath. She's 31 yrs old, in overall good health...but she is a smoker & is on birth control. There is also a strong family history of cancer (her mother's had Leukemia twice, is currently in treatment). I told her to go to urgent care. She did, she has elevated counts and they sent her to emergency. She's on her way now, I'm very concerned! What could be the possibilities here?
