Can Varicose Veins On Tongue Lead To Cancer?

default
Posted on Wed, 15 Jun 2016
Question: what can be done about varicose veins on my tongue/ I just came from seeing an oral surgeon and he was no help. I told him I have a mouthful of sores, red & white, on & under tongue. I did not know that what I was seeing were varicose veins. with all I was seeing it looked like cancer. I had looked up oral cancer pictures & what I saw looked very much like my mouth. The oral surgeon had no comments about all the red & white bumps or the pain I'm in. I'm very upset. I am not even sure who to ask or who to see for answers.

Brief Answer:
may be geographic tongue

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

I understand your concerns. From your description it appears to be geographic tongue. It is a benign condition with red and white patches but can be very painful at times.

If you can upload a picture then I can advise better. For symptom relief, local anaesthetic gels can help, also antiseptic mouth rinses. Avoid hot and spicy foods.

Hope this helps. I will be available for follow up.

This has been going on for over four months, have never had anything like it before. I have no way to send picture. What causes this and what can I do or who can I see to get it under control. The gels only help for a brief period of time.

Brief Answer:
you can send a picture

Detailed Answer:
Without a picture it is difficult to comment on the nature of this problem. Just click with smartphone and email it to YYYY@YYYY with subject as "ATTN Dr Indranil Ghosh". It will help a lot.

If it looks benign then topical steroids can be applied. This needs prescription by doctor. They can put it under control.

I do not have a cell phone so I realize how difficult this is for a helpful solution.
The pain is bad, my mouth looks bad, all purplish, red and white raised areas all over the tongue ,the sides and under. All the way back to my throat. I'm not sure which specialist to go see now. Can you advise? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
yes I understand

Detailed Answer:
As you have already consulted an oral surgeon, I would suggest you meet an internal medicine specialist. He/she can show the way forward.
