Can Using Lifts Reduce Ones Height?

default
Posted on Mon, 15 Sep 2014
Question: Hi Doctor, I am male, 57 years old. My height is 1.62 m and weight is 65 kg. I was taking a lift from 10th storey to 2nd storey. Will I lose my height (I mean decrease in height) if my hands and body touched the side of the lift when it was going down? My thinking is that something is pulling my body down and that affects my height. Sorry to ask a silly question but I would like find out more answers from doctors. Thank you,.

Brief Answer:
No decrease in height from lift

Detailed Answer:
Hi, thank you for using Healthcare Magic.

There is nothing to be worried about in taking a lift up or down, or touching the sides. Your height is fixed at this age. Gravity is always pulling you down whether you are walking, riding or traveling in a lift. But this does not affect your height.

I see from other questions you have asked that you are concerned about your height. Try not to worry. After a certain age (early 20s) your bones stop growing and that is where your height remains. Nothing can change it; the bones do not become shorter. Even if they get thin from osteoporosis, they remain the same length.

The only thing that happens during the day if you are standing a lot, is that the soft tissue between the vertebrae can become a little compressed temporarily and this may create a slight change in measurement. But once they are stretched back to normal (by you maintaining a good posture!) nothing has changed. The bones remain the same length and your height is the same. So don't worry!

Hope this answers your query. If you have further questions, I would be happy to answer them.
