Posted on Tue, 6 May 2014
Question: I suffer ulcerative colitis. I am experiencing mild Tinnitus - I suspect it may be linked to UC? How do I treat this problem - low level hush in ears (like air coming through an airconditioner vent).

Brief Answer: As below: Detailed Answer: Hi, Thank you for your query. 1. The Tinnitus is possible due to the following reasons: a. Autoimmune if related to Ulcerative Colitis. b. Drug induced if related to Pentasa (Mesalamine) c. Age related (Presbyacusis). d. Common reasons such as build-up of Ear wax, recent colds and so on. 2. Get your ears examined to rule out ear wax. Then get a Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) and an Impedance Audiometry (Tympanometry) done. Stress, fluctuations of blood pressure, low hemoglobin, low blood sugar levels should be ruled out. If these are normal, and if the tinnitus is not vascular (matching with the heartbeat), you may try the following; 3. a. Increase the dose of steroids. b. Change the current medication with other immunosuppressants. c. Medication such as Gingko biloba, multi-vitamins and anti-oxidants may also help in reducing Tinnitus. 4. Further therapy may be discussed with your reports, if the tinnitus persists. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them. Regards.
