Can The Ondem And Powergyl Syrup Be Given Together?

Question: Hi Doctor,

My daughter 8.5 years is down with severe stomach infection. She has been vomiting last night. In morning, loose motions started too. I have given her first dosage of Powergyl syrup 4 ml. Can I give her Ondem syrup too. If yes, can they be given together or at some interval? Please suggest.

Greetings of the day

Dear Ms XXXXXXX

You daughter seems to be suffering from acute Gastroenteritis, which is usually viral and self limiting. If the following criteria are fulfilled then there is no cause for concern

1. Absence of blood in loose stools
2. Absence of fever
3. Absence of generalized tenderness in abdomen

Powegyl Syrup contians combination of 2 antibioticss: Norfloxacin and Metronidazole. Antibiotics are one of the widely misused drugs. In case of your daughter antibiotics are presently not indicated(Metronidazole itself causes nausea/vomiting as side effect). You can safely give Ondem syrup which will control vomiting.

The aim of management of Gastroenteritis is

1. Ensure good intake of water and electrolytes to presvent dehydration

2. Ensure adequate intake of nutrition to prevent weakness

3. Medication to control associated symptoms like nausea, pain in abdomen

I would suggest the following

1. Continue giving anti-emetic like Ondem

2. Probiotic syrup or sacchets like Darolac will be helpful in limiting the episode of loose stools

3. Ensure intake of Electrolyte solution preferably WHO recommended ORS solution

4. If there is associated cramping abdominal pain then antispasmodics can be given

5. Home made ORS : Dhal water, rice water, tender coconut water

Do consult Pediatrician if you notice any of the following

1. Presence of blood in stools

2. Vomiting not controlled by medication

3. Decreased Urine output

4. Signs of dehydration

Ondem syrup will take care of vomiting only as its an anti-emetic drug. As its a prescription drug, you will require prescription. The dosage is 6ml thrice a day.

For abdominal pain antispasmodic like Dicylomine syrup or Drotavarine will be helpful. Do follow the rest of advise too.
