Can The HPV Infection Stay Dormant For 10 Years?

default
Posted on Fri, 21 Oct 2016
Question: I have been sent an appointment for a colonoscopy following a cervical screening 3weeks ago . I am informed I have a high risk hpv infection.approx 7 yea ago I had a colonoscopy & loop biopsy done & have had yearly screening ever since .has this infection been contracted since my last screening as the results last year were all clear ? Or is it possible that this infection has been dormant for over 10>12 years . No reason was given for my last colonoscopy than I had pre_cancerous cells

Colcoscopy is the term I was trying to write - auto correction on my tablet ,sorry , it's a real pain ! I had a colcoscopy about 7 or 8 years ago with a loop cone biopsy of my cervix at the same time for "abnormal cells" & have had yearly screening since, that have all been " all clear" until this latest one 3 weeks ago .received the results today along with an appointment in 2 weeks time for another colcoscopy because of " high risk hpv virus " showing on my results.I don't understand how this can be so ?

Brief Answer:
This virus stays dormant!

Detailed Answer:
HI and thanks for this precision.

It is true that this virus can stay for several months/years in a dormant state. This is certainly what they found. There is certainly the presence of this HPV in the sample and that is why it is important to inspect the cervix and make sure that there are no lesions that should raise concerns about a possible cancer. Be calm and relaxed as there would certainly be no advanced lesions given your regular paps that have been all normal.

Keep me posted on the outcome of the next visit.
