Can Swelling In The Glans Penis Be Treated?

default
Posted on Fri, 12 May 2017
Question: See previous note?

Unprotected oral sex with sex worker 6 weeks ago. 17 days later glans penis became sore and swollen. No discharge, no blistering, just inflamed irritated skin. No pain with urination except the discomfort as the urine hit the swollen gland and then stung on the surface after (once thevstream started, no pain.) first Dr. Two weeks ago does not suspect STD but did suspect yeast due to a double course of broad spectrum antibiotics I was on in when the pain and rash appeared. Prescribed clotrimazole 1%. Rash and pain did not improve, and red rash spread to scrotum. No itching in either place, just pain on penis. Second Dr. Yesterday says no yeast, no std, contact dermititis and prescribed steroid cream. I am concerned. What do you think? I had blood and urine taken yesterday for a full std screen anyway.

Brief Answer:
does not sound like a std

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

this description does not fit with a STD, although I can't completely exclude one. For example, blistering is expected with herpes. Spreading is not expected. Syphilis usually causes an ulcer 21 days after exposure. Gonorrhea may cause balanitis and local spread but the most common symptoms originate from the urinary tract and there is usually some discharge. Other pathogens may include gardnerella vaginalis which may also cause local infection usually produces a fishy odor and urinary tract symptoms. I could go on to argument against more diseases but you see the point I suppose.

Since you've done the tests already, the results would provide additional help. Be warned though that some of the tests may have to be repeated later.

I can't say whether it's a dermatitis (inflammation due to irritation, allergy, drug reaction or anything else) either. You've tried antibiotics and antifungals so far without success so if the STD panel returns negative, a trial of steroids sounds reasonable.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
Kind Regards!
