Can I Take Substitution Of Estrace Inspite Of Having Side Effects For Generic?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 May 2014
Question: I've taken Estrace for many years. I can't take the generic they offer in the states-it makes my legs itch and the blood goes to my legs and makes my leg veins look like a circulatory chart. It's also expensive in the states so I've ordered from a Canadian pharmacy who got it from Singapore. Anyway, I ordered the brand name Estrace (that's what my Rx stated (brand name only) and Estradiol Valerate Tablets (Progynova brand) came in the mail. I'm a little concerned...should I be? Thanks, XXXXX

Brief Answer:
This is a different preparation of estradiol.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

You can either accept the substitution which is a different form of estradiol and hope that it does not affect you as the generic does.or hope a dosage change will work. Generic medications in the United States are permitted to have a 20% variance by law. You may need either more or less than the actual Estrace prescription. Secondly you can refuse medication as they made a substitution that you did not authorize. I doubt however that you'll be successful. Pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies seem to have much more sway than an individual or even the individual physician.

you may wish to try estradiol in a different form than the generic. There are namebrand transdermal patches available in United States under Vivelle-Dot or Minnieville.

I hope one of these solutions work. Many women do better with the transdermal patches or even the vaginal ring called Femring then they do with oral pills. They should be far less impact on your veins Especially if you cannot tolerate a slightly lower dose.
