Brief Answer:
Not recommended during lactation

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on Healthcaremagic.

Saphris contains Asenapine which has been shown to be excreted in milk of rats during lactation. Although it is not known whether it is excreted in human milk and because there is no published experience with asenapine during breastfeeding, an alternate drug would be more preferable, especially while nursing a newborn. Please talk to your psychiatrist about changing the medicine.

is there any long term affects of Keppra and Tegrotol with feeding for 3mths and having medication during pregnancy???

Brief Answer:
Both of the drugs can be taken while breast feeding

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Maternal doses of Keppa which contains levetiracetam even if given in doses up to 3500 mg daily produce low levels in milk and would not be expected to cause any adverse effects in breastfed infants in short or long term.

Tegrotol contains Carbamazepine which is used by a lot of patients. It is also now considered to be compatible with breast-feeding and would not cause any long term side effect.

If you have taken the drugs during pregnancy, although it increases the possibility of having congenital malformations, if you have already given birth, the final result is already before you. Please mention if you have already delivered the baby or are still to deliver.

Brief Answer:
No need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. I have gone through the details and assure you that there is nothing to worry. I hope that Keppra and tegretol would be able to take care of your problems and changing the drugs will not create problems. I do not think any major problems will occur due to the previous breastfeeding on the meds. The children should be fine but you will have to account for their prematurity. For a child born 5 weeks preterm the corrected age would be 5 weeks lesser from birth date. So he would naturally be expected to reach the developmental milestones proportionately late. I would not grow apprehensive about the low platelet issue as of now.

Take care. Wishing you and your family good health.
