default
Posted on Wed, 10 Sep 2014
Question: I am Diabetic for last 25 years and have generally Blood sugar fasting as 120 and PP around 150 after medication. Earlier till 2005 , I was taking simple Obimet 500 post breakfast and dinner but was advised to shift to Obimet SR 500 instead , then.
Five years back , I was told to take Obimet SR 500 after breakfast and Obimet 1gm now after dinner. however from last six months , I have increased the dose to Obimet 1gm after breakfast also myself.
Is it Ok and Safe..Would it lead to any complications or side affects.

Brief Answer:
Never vary the dosage on your own.

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir, I had gone through your query and understood your concerns.

Dear Sir, The only reason for the increase of dosage would be only uncontrollable blood sugar levels, i.e., continuously higher readings of blood sugar levels even on present dosage of medication.

That increase of dosage must be done only and only under the guidance of treating doctor. You can never take extra dosage of diabetic medication by your own. It could cause severe low sugar levels.i.e., Hypoglycemia.

You din't mention why you have raised the dosage. Any way since you were taking it since six months with out any complications of low sugar levels, probably you must be taking that for increased sugar levels.

Check the sugar levels and if they are normal, You can continue the same.

But This should never be repeated. Any change in medication should be done strictly under treating doctor's advice but never on your own.

Hope this guides you. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries. If you do not have any clarifications, you can close the discussion and rate the answer.
Wishing you good health.

Thanks for quick response Dr. Dulipala,

I gather is that though increase in dosage shouldn't have been done of your own nevertheless, it is Ok to continue like that as long as sugar levels are under control.
After increase in dose , I didn't face any symptoms arising out of acute low sugar levels. However...I have following issues

1. At times and not always , I see the full tablet in my stool in the morning. what could be the reason.
2. If you have taken a heavy lunch or evening snacks with sweets , is it right to take an extra Obimet SR 1gm.
3. I have Headaches at times , anxiety levels most of the times and puffyness below eyes...Is it linked with persistant medication of Obimet. Is there any answer to these concerns. Are there more refined medicines available

Brief Answer:
Never take extra dose for the extra meals you take

Detailed Answer:
Hi Sir, welcome back.

Yes sir you are correct.

The reason of finding tablet in stool may not be accurate but the most probable reason could be the in a sustained releasing(SR) tablets, the tablets will be en-coated to release drug slowly over time. May that is the cause. In that case, if it more significantly frequent, then you need to change the tablet to normal metformin.

You can go for any brand with the drug metformin. Don't worry of brand.

Never take extra dose for the extra meals you take. Try to avoid taking large amount or for once leave it, but don't go for extra dose.

For other symptoms, have a thyroid and lipid profile along with Hb%. Any of them could cause them.

Hope this helps you,
Thank you Sir.
