Can High Estrogen And Low Testosterone Levels Cause Depression?

default
Posted on Wed, 29 Jun 2016
Question: I have been having depression and anxiety, I had been on HRT by pellets, I started to feel slightly depressed then anxiety just about Christmas so I go to my Dr. for the pellets, not sure what he gave me but he did say he was giving me a testosterone booster don't know what else. In just about 2 weeks I got diverticulitis and had to take strong antibiotics by IV for 14 days. My depression and anxiety has gotten worse. I found a clinic that did the Biote pellets so I went to them, got my blood results today, she said my estrogen was very high and testosterone was low, plus my thyroid was low and wants to increase my dosage from 112 to 137. First could the high estrogen be causing the depression along with the low testosterone? Is it safe to increase the synthroid that much at one time? I'm 68 yrs old widowed female, had a hysterectomy at 50yrs old, removed everything. I had a heart attack in 2008.

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

It is possible that hormonal changes in estrogen and testosterone are contributing to anxiety and depression, but a much more likely contributor is the low thyroid functioning. It is safe to increase your thyroid medication by that much, and indeed that is the most likely thing to help you feel better. If after a couple weeks you are still feeling depressed, I would visit your doctor again to recheck thyroid levels.
