Can Fibroids In Uterus Cause Miscarriage?

default
Posted on Thu, 30 Oct 2014
Question: Large fibroids and miscarriage 2nd trimester. If fibroids caused miscarriage could Dr have given or done something to have helped prevent it or was it inevitable? Also, can they give anything that would slow baby's heart rate in distress at 17 weeks? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Details are given below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments:

1) It is seen that large submucosal fibroid can interfere with healthy pregnancy or viable fetus and leads to pregnancy related complication like miscarriage etc. They increase in size during pregnancy period and abortion is quite COMMON in the first trimester (sometimes in 2nd trimester) due to this.

If you become pregnant with intrauterine fibroid, there is NO choice or therapy to prevent miscarriage due to fibroid as it is linked with uterine endometrium. It is better to be pregnant next time after removal of fibroid.

2) There are several reasons of distress or slow heart rate during 2nd trimester of pregnancy. Some causes can be ruled out through autopsy after miscarriage.

Some underlying factors can be managed conservatively. However, it is NOT possible to increase baby's heart rate during distress at 17 weeks. Baby should be at least 28 weeks.

Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query.

Wish your good health and take care yourself.

Thank you for the reply. Is it the same that you cannot bring baby's heartbeat back to normal at 17 weeks if it is too fast (that is what I had asked but you replied that it couldn't be increased, could it have been decreased). The fibroid I had grew very rapidly in first trimester to over 14cm round and another grew to 2cm. Would complications from largest fibroid have caused the rapid heartbeat right before baby passed away. Most likely with this size you think the pregnancy would not have continued?

Brief Answer:
Medicine is NOT effective below viable age.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for follow up query. I understand your concern.

1) Actually, viable age of intrauterine fetus is 28 weeks. Below that age, NO medicine is effective to increase or decrease fetal heart rate during respiratory distress due to immaturity of lungs and lack of surfactant. It should be NORMAL naturally or by own.

However, some conservative management like changes in posture, lying position, O2 inhalation to mother, fluid therapy etc can be done to stabilize the condition.

2) It CAN'T be predicted the exact time of development of rapid fetal heart beat. However, large fibroid may be the causative agent of fetal distress and death. I suggest you NOT to be stressed yourself and get operated large fibroid before planning of your next pregnancy.

Hope, I have answered your queries. Kindly, close the discussion.

All the best and good luck.

Regards,
Dr S Patra
