Can Exercise Trigger Migraine?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: I've just read on your site that exercise can trigger a migraine. I just started an exercise program and have had two migraines and an almost migraine. I ride 20 minutes on a stationary bike, do 20-25 minutes working out with a trainer on gym machines such as those that use the biceps, extend the legs, extend the back, etc. You recommend riding a bike, walking, I think swimming, etc. What do you recommend for me? Oh, I am 73 and had not been active for awhile. The exercise is helping my body, but is it causing a migraine?

Brief Answer:
try the following.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query.

Physical activity is very important for your health .I would encourage to continue the exercises and don't give up because of the migraine episodes.

Exercises are a known trigger of migraine in susceptible individuals. This is more evident when physical activity is started after not being active for some time.
You should start gradually with your physical activity ,moderate activity 2-3 times a week.
Recommended for you would be walking ,swimming ,brisk walking, dancing etc.It depends which do you like more.
Regardless the sport you chose , the beginning should be gradual and moderate.

You should not start exercising suddenly.First you need to warm up with some stretching exercises and then gradually begin with your activity.
You should eat well before exercising (1-2 hours before). In this way you can avoid and decrease in blood sugar during exercising that can trigger migraine.
-It is very important to be hydrated .Drink plenty of water before ,during and after exercising.

Hope it helps.
Let me know if you have any other question or doubt to clarify.I will be happy to help you.

Kind regards,
Dr.Rovena Murati
