Can Excessive Weight Gain After A Robotic Prostatectomy Lead To Fluid Build Up In The Abdominal Cavity?
Question: Hi
I had a robotic prostatectomy 18 days ago. My lymph nodes were also removed. I had a lymphatic fluid drain in my side which was still draining when it was removed about 4 days ago. After that I could see a fluid build up between my abdominal muscles and my skin of about 500 ml. It is now about half that size.
I am wondering if I have fluid build up in my abdominal cavity and if this is or will cause a problem. I have gained over 5 lbs in the last 5 days - could this be the fluid or perhaps I am gaining weight since my exercise has been severely reduced. I think my abdomen seems to look a bit bloated and I have uncomfortable (not severe) pains there. This could be just regular post operation from incisions etc and also perhaps my intestines are not yet working normally ( I take hot water in am and have 1 - 3 bowel movements a day).
Also my left testicle is quite tender.
Do you think I have and need to be concerned about lymphatic fluid in abdominal cavity?
thanks

Brief Answer:
Need to consult the operating surgeon for revaluation...
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The swelling of the abdominal wall is mostly due to collection of fluid in a subcutaneous plane. In view of recent wight gain possibility of collection of fluid in peritoneal cavity has to be ruled out by doing ultrasound scanning of abdomen.
I would suggest you to consult the surgeon who has performed surgery for revaluation and further treatment.
Hope I have answered your query.
