Can Endometriosis Affect Fertility?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 Jan 2016
Question: I've just had laproscopic surgery 4 days ago for kissing ovaries, 2 massive endometrioma one in each ovary, adhesions and advanced endometriosis. The surgeon drained both ovaries and did deroofing to right ovary and done a cystectomy on left ovary. Extensive adhesiolysis was performed between fallopian tubes and pelvic side wall. Now I need an mri scan. Why would I need this? Is there a concern for cancer? My mother had breast cancer at 42 years old. I am 30 years old. I've never been pregnant. What are my chances of getting pregnant with my situation?

Brief Answer:
Endometriosis and pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

YOu recently had laparoscopy for removal adhesions and endometriosis. Your surgery sounds very intense and quite involved. I am not sure why your surgeon would recommend a MRI after your surgery. The MRI would not be for cancer screening as while doing the laparoscopy they would have obtained tissues samples and checked for cancer. I would ask your surgeon directly why you need a MRI. If you are not satisfied with their answer then don't get it. You have the right to know why someone is doing tests on you.

The last question you have is what are your chances of getting pregnant are. At this time you are at the best chance of getting pregnant. The adhesions will reform in the future and will reduce your fertility. So if you want to get pregnant I would again ask your surgeon when you can start trying to get pregnant. They will probably say in the next 2-3 months post surgery.

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions

I have not got the pathology report back from tissue he obtained in surgery yet how long does this usually take? surgeon said he would like to start me on 6 months of prostap injections why would this be? the doctors and nurses have not been very informative I don't really understand what I've actually had done to be honest! I don't know what deroofing means, or adhesiolysis means. I have to see a endometriosis specialist in 8 weeks time. do you have any idea why someone would need an MRI scan a week after surgery?

Brief Answer:
endometriosis

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for returning to HCM with your additional questions

You have very extensive endometriosis by your report. This is where the lining of the uterus called the endometrium is implanted throughout your your pelvic region. The surgeon removed most of the areas with endometriosis but you still have areas that are growing. the prostap is a treatment to reduce further growth of the endometriosis.

Lysis of adhesions means the cut adhesions or scar tissue around your uterus and ovaries. Deroofing means they opened up a large collection of endometriosis and drained the material in the cyst.

The MRI maybe to see what other areas in your pelvis has endometriosis and to do staging of the amount of disease in your pelvis. They will not be doing the MRI for investigation of possible cancer.

The biopsies and pathology reports take about 1-2 weeks to get back to the surgeon.

I hope this answers your questions
