Can Effectiveness Of Counselling Be Measured?

default
Posted on Thu, 15 May 2014
Question: What evidence is there to show that counseling does any good at all ? I have been in "Counseling" for 31 years. At NO TIME DID ANY COUNSELOR EVER TELL ME HOW THEY KNOW OF ANY EVIDENCE THAT COUNSELING WORKS.
They tell you theories, they tell you what research says, they tell you about the side effects of drugs, they give you tests, the ask "How are we feeling" , they believe that "by talking about one's problems one will get better". But they never tell you how to see signs that what they are doing, "Counseling", has done any good for you at all. They tell you that "time is up now". They ask questions about your mother, your father, "how did that make you feel", research shows that THIS drug has "THESE" side effects. They ask you, on and on and on they ask you. But they never tell you about any data that they collect that would provide any measurable evidence that counseling does anything except take time, results in prescriptions and "we will call 911 if you are suicidal". They never tell you that counseling has any results at all because they don't know because they don't collect and report ANY KIND OF EVIDENCE THAT COUNSELING WORKS BECAUSE THERE IS NO PUBLICLY AVAILABLE INFORMATION THAT REPORTS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COUNSELING. THERE ARE NO TOOLS FOR EVALUATING THE EFFECTIVENESS OF COUNSELING. NONE. NONE AT ALL. BUT THE PRACTITIONERS OF COUNSELING WILL TAKE YOUR TIME, YOUR MONEY AND YOUR HOPES THAT WHAT THEY ARE DOING, WHICH IS MORE TALKING, DOES ANY GOOD AT ALL. THE ENTIRE "MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM" IS A RIPPING OFF LIE ON THE PUBLIC AND THERE'S NO EVIDENCE TO PROVE THAT IT'S NOT A LIE ! MY 31 years of experience shows that IT IS A SCAM ON THE PUBLIC AND I HAVE WASTED 31 YEARS OF MY LIFE TRUSTING THESE LIARS AND I HAVE NO WAY TO SHOW ANY EVIDENCE THAT ANY OF THEIR WORK HAS BEEN EFFECTIVE.
AND THERE IS NO LAW TO STOP THE MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM. EVERY YEAR ONE MILLION PEOPLE COMMIT SUICIDE IN THE USA AND THAT NUMBER HAS NO CHANGED IN 30 YEARS. MEASURE THE EFFECTIVENESS ? YOU CAN'T. NO ONE CAN.

It may not work for all

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting your query on HealthcareMagic.

I am very well aware of the anguish that you are experiencing and I mostly agree with you. Just as you said, no one can measure the effectiveness of counselling, since the counselling sessions go on for long times.

Some people go there because they have no one else to talk to. This may help sometimes, when the person is trying to get rid of guilty feelings etc. Other people do need someone to talk to.

Mostly the counsellors ask questions about the person's past and try to correlate it with present symptoms. I personally feel that when the bitter parts of past life are remembered the person becomes more miserable than getting better. Not knowing how to manage the current problems in life, bringing up past issues may make it worse. Sometimes people end up breaking up with their parents or friends just because their counsellor thinks that their parents have done something wrong to them in past. They may suggest staying away from the person who has harmed them in some way in the past.

I think the past is better forgotten. It should not be brought up again. If you feel insecure in someones presence, stay away from them. Do not bring the issues up again. Stay calm. Maybe try yoga or meditation to bring peace in life.

Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
