Question: Hi, This question is for cardiologists. my kid is 2.5 yes old and we have been told she has mitral value leakage in the heart which needs open heart surgery. she also has ASD. I read some where that closing the ASD might cure the value leakage. is that true? also is it possible to do the surgery in minimal intrusion way without open heart?

Brief Answer:
ASD will need closure

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr XXXXXXX
I am Dr.Rajesh Teli,MD.
I have gone through your query. Thanks for using HCM.
Basically ASD is a defect(hole) in between 2 upper chambers of heart. Some ASD can be closed witout surgery with help of a device. But I need to have exact report of echo to guide you whether device closure is feasible or not.
Surgically it can be easily operated with minimal access approach.
As far as Leakage of mitral valve is concerned,I need to know exact detail of severity of leakage.Mild leak may not need anything and is usually well tolerated. If leakage is moderate or severe then it may need either repair or replacement.I need to have detailed echo report to guide you what kind of intervention is needed.
I request you to attach echo,Ecg and X ray chest report or actual plates.
My best wishes
Dr.Rajesh Teli,MD.

Brief Answer:
need detailed evaluation

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mr XXXXXXX

I could open only first page of report which states 11 mm size of defect and Mild Mitral valve prolapse.

This report is not sufficient enough to make decision of further course of management. You should give actual recording of dynamic study. I suggest you to get Echo study done by a cardiologist who is performing device closure, because he will be right person to do it and guide you.

There are 2 doctors know to me, Dr XXXXXXX Dalvi at Glenmark hospital XXXXXXX and Dr XXXXXXX Chag at CIMS hospital, XXXXXXX who are proper expert for this..

My best wishes
Dr.Teli.
