Posted on Tue, 10 Jan 2017
Question: Hello I recently had a random urine and blood test. Everything in blood and urine test was normal except for microscopic blood in urine found and also high amounts of calcium oxalate crystals found. I then did an ultrasound which came back normal. My question is can the calcium oxalate crystals cause microscopic blood in urine?

Brief Answer:
Yes, calcium oxalate crystals can be a cause of microscopic blood...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Definitely yes, calcium oxalate crystals can be a cause of microscopic blood. Further normal ultrasound scan is a good sign. I would not be worried about this problem.

Brief Answer:
Reviewed... No concerns either...

Detailed Answer:
I reviewed the urine routine report and I don't find any concerning features in it. Calcium oxalate stones could be responsible for microscopic blood. It should settle down with plenty of fluids and cranberries.

Hope this helps.

One last question... It is not considered stones I believe? Correct? Is crystals different from stones? Do you think it can be something like bladder cancer since the blood in urine?

Brief Answer:
Cystals accumulate to form stones...

Detailed Answer:
Calcium oxalate stones are formed by accumulation of cyrstal particles. Therefore we cannot absolutely rule out presence of stones. I understand you had a normal ultrasound scan; but at times scans can miss stones.

I wouldn't think about bladder cancer right away. Presence of crystal in enough to identify the bleed cause. We might repeat this urine routine say 2 weeks to know if it's resolved.

Hope this helps
