Can Anxiety Be Dealt With Through Low Dose Medication Taken Over A Long Term?

default
Posted on Tue, 9 Jan 2024
Question: I have suffered from addiction most of my life on and off for over 55 years - I am 66 now but still active and clean (except slow withdrawal of benzodiazepines) I have not had a narcotic or alcohol or other drugs for over 4 years. The slow taper is hell at each small long lasting between some time I have reduced my doses that where medically prescribed by over 80% but these last 2 have been hell and the fast and simple question for do you see and/or is there research out there that says that a particular individual my just need to stay on a certain dose for long term as long as they are monitored by a Professional Medically Trained Psychiatrist and monitored by the Pharmacist Reporting System and blood work, in other words can Anxiety be treaded by medication (just as other disorders where other forms of treatment have not worked) a low does over long term. Why should I have to suffer because the general hysteria (justifiable so) over drugs and addiction is so rampant and there has not been an alternative medication that has helped and I have tried most all of them. Thank you and any direction or thoughts of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Even think of the patient who has not been an addict but have been on these medications for some time. Thank you in advance and I know this is a loaded question and you would need to know a whole lot more about me and medically my history but anything would be great, thank you, XXXXXXX - XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

It is advisable to continue to try to taper off the benzodiazepine especially given concerns about memory loss and falls in the population over age 65. I doubt you have exhausted all 20 available antidepressants indicated for treatment of anxiety, which are safer and better for treatment of anxiety in the long run. Further, 15 structured sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy may also help the process.
