Question: Respected doctor
my daughter of 8 years suffered from severe cough, high temperature , vomiting , loose motion .she was put on oral antibiotic by a pediatrician .But her problem worsened . Finally she had to be hospitalized and diagnosed to be suffering from respiratory infection(bacterial), vitamin d deficiency and enlarged adenoid after various investigations. ( blood Test,XRAY a, CT Scan, Swab test etc. ) . After 4 days of hospitalization her condition has improved .ENT doctor has advised us to remove her adenoid by surgery and has advised to do a sleep study. she has developed snoring after she became ill.She did not have a history of snoring earlier though she breathes through her mouth occasionally while sleeping. Please advise whether we should go for the operation or not . Will the adenoid regrow after operation?

Regards

Please answer the questions below so that I can guide you better

Detailed Answer:
Hi...by what you quote I feel that your daughter has developed this upper airway resistance syndrome only recently after this infection (Moreover she never had snoring before). I have a few questions for you. Please answer them so that I can guide you better -

Questions:
1. How many days per month does she have runny nose or sneezing?
2. How many nights per month does her sleep get disturbed due to above symptoms?
3. Does she feel breathless when she runs around or plays with other kids?
4. Are the symptoms when there are seasonal changes?
5. Is there any family history of asthma or any other sort of allergies like skin allergy etc.?
6. Are the above symptoms always associated with fever?
7. Is there any family history of adenoids?
8. Did she have recurrent tonsillitis in the past?

Brief Answer:
Instead of surgery - intranasal steroids can be given

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... I have just read through your answers. I feel this is an acute episode and not a longstanding problem. This is the reason why I do not feel that surgery is indicated immediately. You can use a short course of Intranasal Steroids like Fluticasone for a period of 4 weeks and then reassess her symptoms. If the problem of mouth breathing and snoring is still persisting then definitely we need to consider surgery as an option. But I feel that she will recover well enough with intranasal steroids itself.
