Can Zosert Be Taken During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Mon, 3 Nov 2014
Question: I am 27years old and was a psychiatrist patient for the last 4 years. From the doctor’s treatment have controlled a lot in my medicines and now taking only Zosert 25mg “once in two days” from last 4months.
I am pregnant now (about 2 months). Is it safe to take this tablet during pregnancy? Now that I have taken this tablet for the last 4 months will this harm the baby? Incase of withdrawal needed, request your advice on next proceedings?
We had consulted our psychiatrist where he says there is no proven records / side effects observed on this tablet consumption and suggesting us to stop immediately on precautionary factors.
However need a second opinion please...

Brief Answer:
Its a CATEGORY-B drug

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for contacting health care magic.

Zosert is sertraline , which is an SSRI. It is a category B drug which means that animal studies have proven no foetal risk on its usage but trials on humans/pregnant women have not been done. So to be used in pregnancy only if benefits outweigh the risks.

now that you have already been on it for last 4 months, it is indeed advisable to stop in the initial organ forming weeks ( till 12 weeks) of pregnancy. It can be safely restarted in last trimester if required.

You need not worry , just stop it now. There are various levels of scans which has to be done during antenatal period to find out for anomalies if at all it develops, and then appropriate action may be taken , but that is only if the growth is abnormal or anomaly is found.

NT SCAN = 11weeks to 14weeks.
ANOMALY SCAN= LEVEL 2 SCAN= 18 -20weeks

So dont worry, and be regular for your antenatal visits and scans.
