Can Valtrex Cause Rosacea?

default
Posted on Sat, 31 Oct 2015
Question: Can valtrex cause rosacea? I seem to develop redness and rosacea after taking 2mg x 2 dose over 12hours.
I had a cold sore 5 weeks ago and although it is healed, it seems to have left a red scar. Over the past months I took the 2mg x2 dose several times as I kept feeling the symptoms of prodrome and to prevent another outbreak I took Valtrex several times with 3-5 day intervals.
Now I am considering doing an IPL treatment for the red scar as it does not seem to be healing on its own. And I should be taking valtrex again prior to the IPL treatment.
I have just managed to calm down the rosacea flare up and am wondering if I would have another flare up if I take the valtrex again.

Brief Answer:
Valtrex is not associated with rosacea

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query and i have noted down your concern.

Valacyclovir dors not cause or exacerbate rosacea. Regarding scar erythema, it usually fades with time though you may opt for IPL if it does'nt seem to go down as expected. However, IPL may risk flaring herpes and definitely you would need valacyclovir for prophylaxis.

Ive also been taking high doses of vitamin ester c 3600 mg /daily, thinking it might help heal the cold sore.

Now I am wondering if it is causing the redness and flushing i have been experiencing.

I think I am taking too much Vitamin c and will stop. How many days does for the excess vitamin c to clear my system.

What can I do?

Brief Answer:
You can just stop it. Any excess of vitamin C is not stored inside body

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I think you are overdosing with vitamin c.
Excess vitamin c can cause flushing of skin. Vitamin c is a water soluble vitamin and is not stored in body unlike fat soluble vitamins like A,D,E and K. Any excess of vitamin C above that what is required is eliminated from body.
You can add a few citrus fruits in your diet like sweet lime, oranges et as natural source of vitamin C.
