Question: Hi my 4 years daughter met with first episode of unprovoked seizure two weeks back without fever. Doctor have suggested valparin 200 for her twice a day around 9ml per day once in taking this medicine she feel much tired and giddiness. Doctors want her to continue the medicine for two years. My question was whether this amount of medicine is needed and whether this seizure will come back again if so what are the immediate precautions shall we take before taking her to hospital.

Brief Answer:
All anticonvulsants have side effects.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone very carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Valparin as well as other anticovulsants are known for the side effect profile and that includes tiredness and giddiness. These medicines need to be taken for long. The dose is within the acceptable range and I am sure that your doctor has justified reasons for prescribing it. Please continue it as directed. However, you can discuss with your treating physician whether phenytoin would be suitable in her case since the tiredness is often lesser in case of the latter.

I would also suggest getting an EEG and MRI done to evaluate the underlying cause.

There is not much of home based precautions to take except for avoidance of triggers that have been associated with convulsions (if any). Periodic monitoring of blood valproate levels as well as liver function test need to be done.
