Can STDs Cause Autoimmune Hepatitis?

default
Posted on Thu, 29 May 2014
Question: My wife recently passed away from auto immune hepatitis. she was diagnoses 5 years ago. From the beginning of her illness I was suspicious that the problem may have been an std that she contracted from me as I had been treated for a non specific std 35 or so years ago. however I had relations with other women a few times in our 40 year marrage. My family physician tells me there is no connection between stds and auto immune hepatitis. I got basically the same position from the transplant doctors at UPMC in Pitt. .
the last time I went for blood screaning my liver results were not normal. my dr. was not concerned. this time they are worse and I have not seen him yet. Do you think there is a connection?

Brief Answer:
There may not be a connection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query and a high degree of suspicion.

Indeed there are no STDs which can cause ''autoimmune'' hepatitis or any other such problems. There are also no known rare reports suggestive of this. This looks to be just a guilt and your concern and love for your wife.

What are your results of liver function tests including an ultrasonography. If the Doctor is not concerned , why do you think there can be a connection?

There may not be one...
