Can Omeprazole Cause Stomach Ache When Diagnosed With Gastritis And Panic Disorder?

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Jan 2018
Question: hi doctor,

i have been diagnosed with gastritis and panic disorder 2 years ago, the gastritis and then later panic disorder was mainly due to taking whey protein powder and eggs which caused inflamation in my stomach discovered by the gastroenterologist who did endoscopy on me. its been two years i started getting better so i asked my doctor if i could try taking the whey protein powder again the doc said its fine and recommended i try one which doesn't have sugar and sweetners/aditives. so i got a plain one like the doc suggested and I became very ill my anxiety became bad and i got stomach pain in the upper abdomen so i believe my gastritis/acid reflux has come back and i also believe i may have some form of allergy to whey protein powder and even eggs. i went to doctor they prescribed me omeprazole for one week and told me i should stop taking the omeprazole after one week as i should be better. instead of taking the omeprazole my family member had some mezzopram (form of omeprazole) in the house so i started taking this one. I started feeling better after one week so i stopped taking the mezzopram.. within one day my anxiety went out of control again i started to have anxiety attacks and very bad stomach pain...i ran out of mezzopram (tablets) which i was taking 40mg daily once in morning once in evening. So now i took the doctors prescribed omeprazole 40mg capsules once in morning and once in afternoon. It seems that i am still feeling quite ill it has been two days since i have been taking omeprazole which doctor prescribed but i feel like after i take omeprazole i am still very anxious and getting pain in stomach.. today i took one last tablet i found of mezzopram and immediately after taking it I'm feeling some relief. do you think it is possible that the omeprazole capsules are not suiting my body and that the mezzopram tablets are a better option for me to stick to? because in essence they are the same medicine but i seem to be feeling more ill with one than the other, perhaps could be that fact that one is a capsule and one is a tablet. Would appreciate response.

thank you
XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Poor quality control likely to be there

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.
I've gone through your details and I appreciate your concerns.

Lots of piracy and quality control is there in pharmacy market.
As you are responding to the same salt by other brands most likely the generic Omeprazole you are having has some quality issues.

Keep taking Mezzopram and don’t use the other brand.

Secondly, unless you are lactose intolerant I don't think that whey proteins can cause gastritis. Most likely the protein supplement was having some adulterations and had steroids mixed in it.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards!

Hi doc thanks for reply,

I am quite certain that the whey protein powder is aggregating my symptoms as every time I took it and have taken it in the past I get severe pain in the upper abdomen and feel severely ill and also have anxiety/panic attacks.

I have started taking the mezzopram 40mg again once in the morning once in the afternoon. I am feeling slightly better than before but still some irritation feeling in the upper abdomen and slight anxiety symptoms. How long should I expect this to take before I start feeling fully better?

What is the best course of action I can take also, I am thinking of seeing an allergy specialist and also consult with my gastro enteroligist about this problem I have encountered.

Also how long should I be taking this medicine for. The GP was unclear so far. They told me the wrong thing to stop taking omeprazole after one week when I start feeling better which I did and then I started having anxiety attacks feeling dizzy and severe abdominal pain. So I have continued the medicine.. does this mean my gastritis is severe?

I don’t want to do an endoscopy again it was very painful I did in the past, are there other methods that doctors can use to identify what is happening in my body and how we can resolve?

Before I took this whey powder I was completely fine now it has turned my life upside down having pain in the stomach daily anxiety symptoms breathing heavy light headed XXXXXXX and tiredness.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for follow up my dear patient.
I would suggest you to switch over to Nexium 40 mg twice day.
If not relieved you can safely increase the dose to 80 mg twice daily.

Levosulpiride or Domperidone can be added further to this regimen. They are motility modulators and would help with reflux and gastritis.

Nexium is superior to other PPI's in controlling symptoms related to gastritis and reflux.

But you would needed a prescription from your local doctor for the same.

At least 10 days treatment should be taken before you start feeling better.

does this mean my gastritis is severe? -No its not severe rather its not controlled properly.Proper and aggressive management should be done initially.
Omeprazole is just a basic drug so start taking what i have suggested you.
You would start feeling better in a few days.

If you don't want to go for endoscopy start taking medication. Clinically pain due to acid peptic disorder responds quickly to ppi's.

Don't worry if you will take proper medications you would feel better in few days.

Hope i answered your query well.

Thanks doc

I was reading a website recommended by a family friend doctor called doctor yourself.com it says that for allergies and people with ulcer / acid reflux a High dose of vitamin C is very effective. Do you think this is true in helping to cure gastritis? Because majority of the vitamin C tablets have citric acid and are quite acidic will this make my stomach worse?

Secondly the doctor also mentioned that to combat gastritis I should be doing the reverse and having more acid such as apple cider vinegar after meal. Do you think this is also a good idea or bad?

I just had two spoons of gaviscon this gave me some relief . Is gaviscon good for gastritis?

Brief Answer:
Follow up answer.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again my dear patient,
A doctor follow's what's there written in a standard book. There is no mention of Vitamin C in treatment of gastritis in any of the standard texts or researches.
Individual websites are often designed by a particular group and authenticity of information available is highly questionable(though i will not say that vitamin C can't help;may be a particular clinician has observed some good effects on patients with gastritis; But till date there is no relevant information or trials about use of vitamin C for gastritis in our standard books.

Secondly as you sad vitamin C has ascorbic acid so theoretically it would make things worse only.Apple cider vinegar prevents the microbial infections .Many times its considered that a bacteria named H.pylori is involved in cases of gastritis therefore cider vinegar is given in such cases.

Lastly as adviced by me proper doses of medications are must when we are trying to control symptoms of gastritis. Don't consider natural therapy or alternate medications right now.Initially follow aggressive therapy in proper doses.Once things are in control you could start with natural supplements etc. You should add Levosulpiride or Domperidone in your regimen. But you would needed a prescription from your local doctor.

Hope i answered your query well.
Apart from medicines what food are you thing right now.Food and life style play a vital role along with medicines to control gastritis.

Hi doc,

It’s been two weeks I’m still feeling very ill and getting irritation in stomach have been taking mezzopram 20mg twice a day and even drinking gaviscon (sodium bicarbonate) after meals I can’t see any healing progression. I’m thinking is it possible I have stomach infection which may only be cured by anti biotics? I was reading online that they can check for this with stool samples.. please advise

Brief Answer:
Thorough investigation should be done.Hit and trial method won't help.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Before I took this whey powder I was completely fine-Whey protein is derived from milk and major component is lactose. It can be lactose intolerence also.
Are you taking dairy in your food?
Had you gastroenterologist checked you for lactose intolerence?
If antacids are not helping you i would suggest you to go for a complete gut check up,Which includes the following tests-
1)Endoscopy -To rule out acid peptic disorder.
2Colonoscopy-To rule out inflammatory bowel.
3)Stool test-To look for a bacterial or protozoal infection.
