Can Norethisterone Cause A False Pregnancy Result?

default
Posted on Tue, 1 Sep 2015
Question: Hi Dr, my last period was on 29 May 2015, until now I did not get my period. I did the pregnancy test at home myself and results were negative. On 30 Jul, I went to see my gynae and was told I did not pregnant. Therefore doc prescribed 5mg norethistherone to take 2 tabs 2 times a day. I didn't take until yesterday (10 Aug 15) I started to take 2 pills. Today afternoon I did pregnancy test and result was positive! Could I be pregnant? Or was it due to Norethistherone that caused the positive result? Will I get my period few days later after I took the Norethistherone? If I am pregnant now, will the Norethistherone that I took causes any bad impact on my baby that I end up have to opt for abortion? Or will I miscarriage?

Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
would not cause a false positive

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Norethisterone , in general, is not known to cause a false positive pregnancy result so it is quite possible that you are pregnant.

Pregnancy tests detect the HCG hormone , the levels of HCG should not be affected by norethisterone.
HCG is normally detectable by day 11 to 14 after conception by most pregnancy tests.

The 2 tablets of norethisterone that you used should not have any significant effect on the fetus but this can be confirmed by your doctor when the pregnancy is confirmed and testing done.

If you are pregnant, then your period will not occur.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Brief Answer:
need to start on pregnancy vitamins

Detailed Answer:
HI

The image is not attached right now, you may need to resend.

Kits read differently, some have 2 lines meaning positive, others may actually say the words positive or pregnant.
Your kit may state that 3+ means pregnant.

You should start on pregnancy multivitamins, the baby needs at least folic acid in the first trimester, it helps with the nervous system.

Make sure to use a healthy diet with a lot of fruits and vegetables.

After the test is confirmed, your doctor would likely suggest blood tests.

Brief Answer:
Period of pregnancy is calculated using first day of last menstrual period

Detailed Answer:
HI

Yes, according to the image seen, you are pregnant, congrats

In terms of how far along you are, it would be difficult since your period is not usually regular.

Normally it is calculated from the first day of the last period, since your last period was May 29th, you would be approximately 10 weeks 5 days.
An ultrasound may be suggested to get an idea of the exact age.

If you wish to cross check you can use online pregnancy calculators
If anything else unclear feel free to ask
