Question: Hi, my daughter-in-law has a Mirena implant which her doctor seems to be reluctant to take out. It was implanted about three weeks after the birth of her daughter, who was born May 9th, 2008. The pregnancy was a difficult one with intractable vomiting. After the birth, she had "post eclampsia", where her blood pressure shot up and she had a small stroke. She was in intensive care for three days, I believe, before she was moved to the floor. The implant was put in then. That was around the end of May, 2008. She is now having mood swings, depression, and an aversion to leaving her home. Her OB is no longer practicing, and her family doctor isn't concerned about how long the implant has been in. Is there anything I can do to help her?

Brief Answer:
The IUD needs to be removed.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.

In the current scenario, not only should the IUD be removed, she also needs to be properly evaluated by a specialist. Please find out if this is possible and go for it.

As the contraception is no longer in place, if she has regular sexual activity, pregnancy should be excluded.

Hope I have answered your query. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.

I had the mirena coil fitted 2 years ago. Suffer from constipation, hormonal headaches, tiredness, fatigue and have had severe piles for three weeks that won t go with OTC treatment. I m seeing my GP today but do feel that the coil could be affecting me. I have started bleeding having not done so for over 2 years.

I currently have the Mirena IUS for birth control. (Previously, I had been on Depo injection for 8 years - which I LOVED but we are getting married this year and hope to have children in the next few years, so I was aware I needed to come off this) The Mirena is causing me pain when I exercise. I saw my GP today and we discussed having the Implant fitted instead. However, I am on Topamax for Migraines and have just been researching that this makes the implant ineffective? Can you advise?

I have had mirena for 10 months now and have had no problems in it. I also dont have a period. Last day or two I have had some brown discharge, no smell or anything and no period pains. Should I be worried or is it just an occasional spotting that will go away?

I ve had the mirena IUD for over a year and I still get lower abdominal pain (similar to menstrual cramping), including sharp pains on my left side near the hip bone. I m not sure if this is normal or if there is a problem with it. My gyno said it was normal for up to 6 months, but I ve had it for 12 months already, I m concerned there is a problem with it. I get these kinds of cramps quite frequently.
