Brief Answer:
You can continue it.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Metformin is safe during pregnancy (“no evidence of risk in human pregnancy” according to the FDA). The medication has not been associated with an increased risk of birth defects or complications. You can continue taking it till the labor. You can take an epidural also when on metformin.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

Hello Doctor,

Oh thank you so much Doctor. Will taking metformin just prior to delivery cause low blood sugar in baby because I m planning to breastfeed and I think just after delivery or may be for a day I will not be having any breastmilk to counter low blood sugar of baby as in my first pregnancy I didn't have any breastmilk although I was not on metformin then. Can just born babies be given formula milk.

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Formula milk can be given.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
You can stop taking metformin as soon as the labor pains start. This will not cause hypoglycaemia in newborn baby. For the first day or two you can give some formula milk or expressed milk from some other breast feeding mother in the same hospital.
Hope my answer is helpful.
Do accept my answer in case there are no further queries.
