Can I Plan For A Baby Immediately After Stopping Krimson?

default
Posted on Sat, 28 Jun 2014
Question: Hi Doctor,

I am 29 years, married for 3 years.Planning for a baby.
I was diagnosed with PCOD in February'14 and was put on Krimson 35 for 3 months to address the issue.
I completed the course last month(May2014) and last period also was on schedule (1st day 26th May).
Just wanted to check if I can plan right away for the baby or do i need to wait for another cycle before I start planning? Will there be any side effects of the medication(Krimson 35)

P.S Thyroid levels are normal

Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
There are no side effects of Krimson 35, you can straightaway start planning for a pregnancy.
Just take regular 5 mg per day folic acid supplements ( Tablet Folvite for example ).
Patients with PCOD have irregular cycles and hence, unpredictable ovulation.
You can use follicular monitoring ( tracking the growth of your egg follicle by serial ultrasound scan ) to know for sure your days of ovulation and hence enhance chances of conception.
All the best.
Please feel free to discuss further.

Thanks Dr. Aarti! This is helpful.I am already taking FLOVITE for last 3 months.

Actually my periods were always regular with a 30 -35 days cycle. However, the doctor told me that these could be anovulatory cycles (without egg production) due to PCOD. Just wanted to confirm could there be a chance of an aovulatory cycle still even after taking Krimson 35 for 3 months?

She also asked me to undergo few test such as FSH, LH, Prolaction, DHEAS, FBS, Testosterone and fasting insulin on Day 2 of my menses, however i could not go for these test as was travelling. Though, I am planning this month without undergoing these test. Is there any risk? Can I take these tests later on as well?

Also, one of the tests advised was Rubella IG.Could you please confirm what is this test for?

Thanks for your answers

Detailed Answer:
Hello again.
PCOD , as I wrote earlier, is associated with irregular cycles, and ovulation is erratic and unpredictable.
So yes, follicular monitoring is a must to document ovulation, as ovulation might be delayed or even absent.
It is better to take these tests before planning a baby, as any medication can be sarted.
This is a comprehensive list which I suggest -
FSH, LH, TSH, Prolactin, DHEAS, Free testosterone, Lipid Profile, OGTT.
Rubella screening is unnecessary in my opinion.
Rubella is a virus which can affect the baby in the first trimester, but it is quite rare.
Take care.
Thank you for the appreciation.
