Posted on Tue, 25 Nov 2014
Question: I have exposure 2 times. First one in the month of January 12th and second one on 22nd May. I did first antibody test on 27th April by CMIA method results was negative. During that I was taking serological inhaler. Can it affect the test? Was it conclusive. 2nd test was on 29th sept by CMIA Method antibody again negative. Is it conclusive for 2nd incident. The 1st encounter was condom slipped during vaginal sec. 2nd incident was protected sex with deep throat kissing?

Brief Answer:
You have had conclusive 2nd test

Detailed Answer:
Hello I am Dr Matin and will be answering your question.
You had conclusive second test which is negative as it has crossed the maxm
'window period' of HIV (3 months)
Your 1st test would have been conclusive too , had you not had your 2nd exposure The serological inhaler has no bearing over HIV tests .
Hope this helps.
Thanks

Just the final question many places it shows antibody test is conclusive at 6 months. Which is the right window period to rule out possibility of HIV?

Brief Answer:
Better technology

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking the follow up.
Earlier the window period of 6 months used to be considered (with earlier generations of tests ). With the advances in diagnostic technology , the window period has been reduced to 3 months (newer 4th generation tests) and this is the universal mode.
Hope this helps.

Detailed Answer:
Hello you have written about Chemiluminescence Microparticle Immunoassay (CMIA) which is a 4th generation test The window period for the CMIA test is 3-4 weeks. 4th generation tests will pick up 95% of infections at 28 days after exposure.
Hope this helps.
