I'm caring for my 90 yo father. He urinates frequently throughout the day and believes he has OAB. Since his BP is well controlled with HTN medications we asked his internist if he could stop taking HCTZ. Dad's doctor said we could try this. I noticed on dad's most recent labs that he has CKD stage 3A. Because of this diagnosis should he remain on the HCTZ?

Brief Answer:
It is safe to withhold HCTZ.

Detailed Answer:
Good day and thank you for being with healthcare magic!

Having CKD stage 3 doesn't necessarily mean he needs hydrochlorothiazide. If he develops edema in his lower extremities then you may need to see your internist again so a diuretic (e.g. Hctz) can be resumed.

He may also have prostate enlargement which is very common for his age and may have been aggravating his urinary frequency. I suggest a urinalysis and an ultrasound of the kidneys bladder and prostate may elucidate this issues further.
