Question: I am concerned that one or more of my daily medications may be causing mental dysfunctions, specifically very high forgetfulness and short-term memory. My current medications are:
Furosemide 80 mg
Flomax 0.4 mg
Folic Acid 1 mg
Atorvastatin 40 mg
Colace 100 mg
Finasteride 5 mg
Gabapentin 100 mg
Sertraline 25 mg

I am a 78 year-old male, and I have symptoms of Generalized Anxiety for which I am being treated basically by medications. I am becoming more concerned that my I cannot recall even short-term information to continue to do what I started. This also shows updating symptoms in speech and written recall. The short term memory symptoms seem to be increasing too fast to just be symptoms of increasing old age.
My Med List contains Furosemide (80mg), Flomax (0.4 mg), Folic Acid (1 mg), Atorvastatin (40 mg), Colace(100 mg), Finasteride (5 mg), gabapentin (100 mg), Sertraline (25 mg). It is not clear on my Med List how many doses are taken per day. My ST Memory problems are beginning to be chronic and noticeable during conservation and when I am just trying to personally recall information I just recently acquired.

Brief Answer:

None of them known to cause progressive short term memory loss

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

First of all I like to inform you that none of these medications are cause for progressive short term memory loss.

There is some difficulty in memory retention with use of gabapentin but it is often very much limited and rarely in the range of causing functional impairment.

In my opinion, there is a need to look for other causes before attributing memory loss to current medications.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
