Posted on Mon, 24 Nov 2014
Question: Can slightly elevated AST and ALT cause nausea and abd pain? Mine are AST 55 and ALT 85. I have been told I have a fatty liver. Can Crestor impact these numbers negatively?

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ms XXXX,
How are you? My name is Dr Suresh Raghavaiah. I am a Liver and Pancreas specialist and I hope to answer your questions today.
I am sorry to hear all the issues you are having.
I understand that you are worried about the elevations in the AST and ALT levels. But these are very minor perturbations, which on an otherwise normal liver function panel, would not need any further investigations. Crestor can and does affect the liver numbers, but never too seriously that it needs to be stopped. The more important point in deciding whether to discontinue the drug will be to see the trend of the AST and ALT levels. I would advise you to get the levels checked in a couple of weeks. If the levels continue to rise, then an argument can be made to discontinue crestor. But if the levels remain the same or are decreasing I would not worry about it. The fact that you have already been diagnosed with fatty liver also puts you at risk for liver damage more easily than if you had a healthy liver. Also the enzyme levels could be raised because of the fatty liver itself. So the best thing to do, as I have said before is to repeat the levels in a couple of weeks and decide then.
Regarding your abdominal pain and nausea, I don t think they are being caused by the raised AST and ALT. It could be the possibly due to the reflux you have been diagnosed with. Please do continue with the antacids which have been prescribed by your provider.

Hope this helps and hope you start to feel better.
Please do not hesitate to contact me for further details.

Have a great day
