Can Aspirin Cause Bluish Discoloration Above The Ankle?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Aug 2017
Question: I seem to have a spontaneous contusion on the vein (or artery?) just to inside front of the shin bone above the ankle. I don't recall bumping anything, at least hard enough to cause a welt, and a bluish swollen line as developed about 4 inches long, as if it is it is following a vein or muscle. This happened perhaps an hour ago. I've elevated the leg and put ice on in. The bluish line seems to follow onto the vein that is immediately in the middle top of the foot. I don't know if this is a mild hematoma, or something more serious, especially because there was no obvious impact. Thank you. - XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Likely to be Hematoma

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for trusting HCM

The bluish discoloration you are describing is likely to be Bruise/hematoma.
Since you are on aspirin, even unnoticed trivial trauma and bumps can lead to bruising and hematoma formation.
However, if you can upload a picture of the discolored area it would be very helpful to confirm.

You can just apply ice on the area of Hematoma and take rest. Hematomas usually get reabsorbed in 2-3 weeks. Since you are on aspirin, always be careful to avoid even trivial traumas. Even unnoticed trivial traumas can lead to hematoma formation.

Hello Doctor

Thank you for the reply. I just uploaded two photos. My wife thinks it is the femoral artery that is enlarged. It is not as swollen as it was when I first wrote. I don't know if you can see the bluish streak and slightly swollen area just above the ankle bones. The swelling has not become worse, but it is a bit painful and sensitive to touch. I have done some elevation and ice. I have no numbness in the feet or elsewhere. But I was really alarmed by how fast it swelled and because it seems like a major artery, not a muscle, or the result of running into something. I do realize even with low dose aspirin I am more prone to contusions. I am otherwise very healthy (rode mountain bike vigorously for 2 hours yesterday) and no other circulatory problems.

Detailed Answer:
Hello again,

Thank you for uploading the pictures.
There is no significant swelling or bluish discoloration that could be identified in the picture. The vein prominence seen just above the ankle is completely normal and nothing to be worried about.
However, since you are noticing slight pain and bluish discoloration, it must be a small hematoma.
There is nothing to be worried about.
Likely cause must be due to strenuous exertion during mountain biking.
You can apply ice on the area.

Hope I was able to help you
