Can Amoxicillin Cause Blood In Urine?
Question: I have been taking amoxicillin after dental surgery for 8 days and then began to see blood in my urine. I went to see my urologist and he was not available. I saw his Nurse Practitioner and she said the blood in the urine was a strong indication of Bladder Cancer without investigating the amoxicillin angle. She said 95% of the time you see the blood in the urine it is bladder cancer. Seems way high. She ordered blood work and urine analysis, a CT Scan and set up a cystoscope. I am 73 years old and have UC. I had Lung Cancer in 2007 and Kidney Cancer in 2008. I do also have an enlarged prostate and a PSA of 20+. I have had 5 prostate biopsies all negative. How likely is this blader cancer or something else?

Based on the facts that you have Hematuria after taking Amoxicillin for a week and you have a doubt it to be due to side effect of Amoxicillin .
Are you taking any drug like Aspirin ?
Amoxicillin is known to have side effect of drug induced Gastritis and Diarrhea but not known to cause Hematuria.
In view of past history of you having Cancer of the lung ,Cancer of the Kidney the possibility of Cancer of the Bladder has to be ruled out which is one of the common cause for hematuria at this age ..
Hematuria in a patient with known to have enlarged Prostate can be due to rupture of a small tiny superficial vein on the surface of enlarged prostate or due to secondary infection .However in any case the cause of hematuria has to be traced out .
Consult qualified Urologist for clinical and digital rectal examination and get following basic tests done to confirm the diagnosis.
1) Urine routine and culture.
2) Ultrasound scanning of abdomen and pelvis
3) Ct T Scan of abdomen and pelvis
4) Endoscopic examination of bladder(Cystoscopy) .
Further treatment will depend upon result of these tests and final diagnosis.
In the mean while start taking antibiotic like Cefixime ,Nitrofurantoin twice daily along with Tomsulosin once daily .
If you are taking Aspirin or any blood thinner drug stop it for a short while .

How likely (%) do you think this is bladder cancer based on visible blood in the urine and my other factors? Someone told me 90-95%..... Do you agree?
